How Proper Antenna Placement Turned a 4 Mbps 5G Connection into 168 Mbps

How Proper Antenna Placement Turned a 4 Mbps 5G Connection into 168 Mbps

Many businesses invest in cellular failover connections to maintain Internet access during outages, but simply installing a modem and activating a data plan doesn’t guarantee strong performance.

Recently, SabreTech helped a customer dramatically improve the performance of their Peplink 5G failover connection without changing carriers or upgrading service plans. Instead, the solution came down to improving RF conditions and signal quality.

The Problem: Slow Cellular Failover Performance

The customer’s Peplink cellular failover circuit was consistently delivering disappointing speeds, averaging only about 4 Mbps download throughput.

After reviewing the cellular connection statistics, we discovered the modem was primarily connecting to a congested low-band LTE/5G carrier with relatively weak signal levels. While the connection remained functional, the combination of signal limitations and tower congestion prevented the failover circuit from delivering the performance needed during an Internet outage.

For a backup connection intended to support business operations, the results simply weren’t sufficient.

The Solution: Improve the RF Environment

Rather than immediately recommending a carrier change, we focused on improving the wireless signal itself.

The existing cellular radio was relocated outdoors and paired with a Peplink ANT-MAX directional antenna, allowing the modem to access a significantly stronger mid-band 5G signal.

By reducing obstructions, improving signal quality, and enabling access to a better-performing cellular band, the modem was able to take full advantage of the available network capacity.

The Results

The improvement was dramatic:

  • Before: Approximately 4 Mbps download speeds
  • After: Approximately 168 Mbps download speeds
  • Improved signal quality and stability
  • Significantly more usable business continuity connection
  • No carrier change required

What had previously been a marginal backup connection became a highly capable failover circuit capable of supporting critical business operations during an Internet outage.

Why Signal Quality Matters

When cellular performance is poor, many organizations assume they need a different carrier or a larger data plan.

In reality, the issue is often RF-related.

Factors such as:

  • Antenna placement
  • Building construction materials
  • Signal attenuation
  • Tower congestion
  • Cellular band selection
  • Antenna type and gain

can have a significant impact on real-world performance.

In many cases, improving signal conditions delivers far greater results than changing service plans.

Optimizing Cellular Failover for Business Continuity

As more organizations rely on 4G LTE and 5G connections for backup Internet access, proper design and deployment become increasingly important.

At SabreTech, we help businesses optimize:

  • Peplink deployments
  • 4G LTE and 5G Internet connectivity
  • Cellular failover solutions
  • SD-WAN implementations
  • Business continuity planning
  • Wireless signal and antenna design

This project serves as a great reminder that sometimes the biggest performance gains come from improving RF conditions rather than replacing hardware, switching providers, or increasing monthly service costs.
